Dating Definition: What Does It Really Mean Today?

I’ve recently had a couple of arguments over the last month or so on this topic. People have asked me or argued with me about what the true definition of dating is today. I’ll be the first one to say that people make it far more complex than it needs to be.

Although we all hate to apply labels, the standard dating definition wants us to do so. Well, today, I’m here to tell you to forget all that noise and then some. It’s the 100 free online dating sites that you constantly browse daily that have you thinking about all this.

They get caught up in these labels and feelings that it just totally takes over their being and well, it kind of ruins things. That’s primarily why I choose to opt for something on the more casual side versus traditional. However, it doesn’t stop there.

Sometimes (although not very frequently) I end up connecting with a local girl that wants to hook up over and over and over. She’s willing and DTF anytime I’m down for it, but at some point in time I know things are going to cross that fine line and we’re going to be considered dating versus just hooking up, smashing, banging, bumping uglies, whatever you want to call it.

When To Worry

That time and only at that time do I start worrying about the true definition of dating. Until a minuscule amount of feelings come into play, I completely forget that there is any feeling involved other than simply skin-to-skin action.

So, what exactly is the standard dating definition?

Well, according to Google’s definitions, the term dating means to

Go out with (someone in whom one is romantically or sexually interested).

That said, I don’t consider dating if it’s a first date or a no-strings-attached hookup. In that particular case, it just means that you’re spending time trying to find someone to be physically intimate with and nothing more. If you go out with someone once, have sex with them, and never speak to them again, you’re not dating – you banged, that’s all.

I guess my point is that you don’t need to get caught up in all the drama or hype if you want to just have sex with someone with no strings attached. Keep things simple and check your feelings at the door.
